I've always been fascinated by zebras.

Perhaps it's because I've always loved horses. Or perhaps it's because I grew up in Africa, where zebras were never just beautiful animals in a picture book. They were wild, intelligent and deserving of respect. Everyone knew a zebra could deliver a surprisingly painful bite or a hefty kick if given the chance.

Yet despite their stubborn reputation, there has always been something magical about them.

As a child, I was captivated by old photographs of Victorian and Edwardian women posing proudly on zebras as though they were elegant riding horses. The images felt wonderfully improbable—a meeting of adventure, glamour and imagination that stayed with me long after I first saw them.

In many ways, zebras have followed me throughout my creative life.

My very first paid commission while I was still at school was designing a Christmas card featuring zebras. Not long afterwards, I was asked to create a zebra-inspired pattern for a Cessna aircraft. The finished design wrapped around the wings and tail, and the owners loved it so much they changed the aircraft's call sign to “Z-BRA”.

It seems zebras have always found a way back into my work.

Zebra Parade is a celebration of that enduring fascination. Inspired by both the elegance of Victorian carousel animals and the majesty of Africa's most iconic striped resident, the design transforms the zebra into something playful, decorative and delightfully theatrical.
